La Mirada Theatre Celebrates the Return of Tony Bennett

Post Date:10/19/2017 9:39 AM

The La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts began celebrating its 40th anniversary last Thursday with a premiere performance by Tony Bennett, who was the theatre’s original star performer.  All 1,251 seats for the event were sold.

Mr. Bennett gave a knock out performance, entering the stage to an immediate standing ovation from an enthusiastic crowd.  He then proceeded to dazzle the audience by singing 23 classic songs, including his trademark hits “The Good Life,” “Steppin’ Out with My Baby”, and “I Left My Heart in San Francisco.”

To finish his performance, he sang an acoustic rendition with no microphone of “Fly Me to the Moon.”  Cheering patrons thanked him with several curtain calls.

The evening also saw the debut of the Theatre’s newly refurbished Steinway piano, the same piano to which Mr. Bennett sang on opening night.  It remained in use for 40 years, and had begun to show its age from wear and tear.

In April, the piano was removed from the Theatre and restored by Ed Whitting, the same man who installed the piano in 1977. It arrived backstage in perfect condition to accompany Mr. Bennett once again.

“Tony Bennett is an American icon who touches the hearts and souls of audiences with his legendary singing and charming stage presence,” says Producing Artistic Director BT McNicholl.  “And to have him return to the La Mirada stage 40 years later is a phenomenal moment that our patrons were able to experience.”

The Theatre’s 40th Anniversary festivities continue on Sunday, October 22 from noon to 4 p.m. with free shows, backstage tours, and special panel discussions.  This event is free and open to all.
