MAYOR HAL MALKIN
CITY OF LA MIRADA

 

Mayor Hal Malkin was first elected to the La Mirada City Council on April 12, 1994 and re-elected on March 2, 1999, March 4, 2003 and March 6, 2007. Mayor Malkin served as Mayor and Chairman of the Redevelopment Agency from 1998-99, 2003-04 and currently. Mayor Malkin was a member of the La Mirada Theatre Commission for 17 years and is involved in many civic organizations, including Member and Past President of the La Mirada Chamber of Commerce, Life Member of the Friends of the Library, Angel for the Friends of the La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts, Life Member of the City of Hope (Shirley Holiver Auxiliary), Life Patron of the La Mirada Symphony. Mayor Malkin served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Rio Honda Chapter of the American Red Cross and as a member of the Executive Committee for the past 9 years.
         
Mayor Malkin has received several awards including: Outstanding Faculty Member, Cerritos College 2002-2003; Member of the Year, La Mirada Chamber of Commerce; Parent-Teachers Association Honorary Service Award; and the Golden State Children's Theatre Appreciation Award.  Mayor Malkin has also sponsored more than 100 Little League, Soccer, Little Miss Softball, and school athletic teams.
         
Mayor Malkin owned and operated Key Rexall Drugs in La Mirada for 23 years.  He sold the business to a major national chain in November of 1994 and is now an instructor and department chair at Cerritos College in the Pharmacy Technology program.
            Mayor Malkin has been a resident of La Mirada since February 1972.  His wife of 34 years is Barbara; and they have two sons, Michael (recently received his PhD. from Stanford University) and Jon (currently in the PhD. Program at the University of Washington).

MAYOR PRO TEM SUSAN TRIPP
CITY OF LA MIRADA

 

Susan Tripp was elected to the La Mirada City Council on March 6, 2001 and re-elected on March 8, 2005. She served as Mayor from March 2004 to March 2005. Prior to 2001, Mayor Pro Tem Tripp earned two La Mirada Volunteers in Action Awards for Leadership and Innovation in the community. As a community volunteer, she served on the Board of Directors for Musical Theatre West and for the Chamber of Commerce. As a La Mirada volunteer she served as Public Safety Commission Chair, Disaster Preparedness Steering Committee Co-Chair, and Neighborhood Watch Advisory Council Chair. She also served eight years on the Communitywide Drug and Gang Task Force.
          Mayor Pro Tem Tripp has been active in local schools as a mentor and Sponsored Youth Coordinator for the La Mirada Kiwanis Club. She was presented with the Superintendent’s Award in 2004 for her service in the Norwalk-La Mirada School District.
                 
          As a councilmember, Tripp has served as Chair of the Marketing and Education Committee for Vector Control, as Trustee for the Sanitation District, and as Vice Chair on the Southeast Area Social Services Funding Authority Board.

         
Mayor Pro Tem Susan Tripp earned her BA and Lifetime K9 California Teaching Credential at San Jose State University. She and her husband, Rolan, owned and operated the La Mirada Animal Hospital from 1989 to 1999. Mayor Pro Tem Tripp and her husband, a veterinarian, now provide behavior services to veterinarians and pet owners nationwide through www.AnimalBehavior.Net, and are pet behavior columnists for www.petconnection.com. Mayor Pro Tem Tripp is an ordained Elder and choir member at Community Presbyterian Church of La Mirada.

          The Tripp’s son, Dan, graduated from La Pluma Elementary, Brethren Christian School, and La Mirada High School before joining the Air Force in 1997 as a firefighter. Dan’s wife, Michelle, is a third generation La Miradan. Dan and Michelle have two sons, Tyler and Bradley.

COUNCILMEMBER BOB CHOTINER
CITY OF LA MIRADA

 

........Councilmember Chotiner was elected to the La Mirada City Council in April 1988, re-elected in April 1992,  1996, March 2001 and March 2005.  Councilmember Chotiner served as Mayor in 1991-1992, 1994-1995, and 1999-2000, and 2005-2006. He has served as Chairman of the Redevelopment Agency three times.  Councilmember Chotiner served on the City's Planning Commission from 1982 until his election to the City Council and was Chairman of that Commission in 1985-86.  He has been actively involved in many school, youth, and civic groups such as:  P.T.A., Boy Scouts of America, Cubmaster Pack No. 882, Friends of the La Mirada Civic Theatre where he was Treasurer and President, Member of the Board of the Directors and Committee Chairman of the Kiwanis Club of La Mirada, member of the Friends of the Library and Friends of the Symphony, Coach and sponsor of "Lil" Miss Softball, and La Mirada Little League.  He was also a local chairman for the March of Dimes and a fundraiser for the Foundation for the Junior Blind.  
        Councilmember Chotiner has served as the City’s delegate to the League of California Cities, California Contract Cities Association, the La Mirada Chamber Board of Directors, the Joint Powers Insurance Authority and the Greater Los Angeles Sanitation District.  He is currently a trustee of the Greater Los Angeles County Vector Control District and is a member of the La Mirada High School Shared Decision Making Council. Councilmember Chotiner has successfully completed the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department City Council Academy.

          Councilmember Chotiner served in the U.S. Navy, is a Certified Scuba Diver, enjoys golf, is a Harley Davidson rider and enthusiast, is an avid reader, and was self-employed for a number of years.  He and Marsha have lived in La Mirada for 30 years and have been married 41 years. His daughter Melanie is married to Luis Murillo. Mark, his son, continues to live in his heart.

COUNCILMEMBER PETE DAMES
CITY OF LA MIRADA

Councilmember Pete Dames was elected to the La Mirada City Council on April 12, 1994; re-elected on March 2, 1999, March 4, 2003 and March 6, 2007; and served as Mayor in 1997-1998, 2001-2002 and 2006-2007. Councilmember Dames is a former member of the City's Parks and Recreation Commission, and has been involved in numerous civic, service, and educational organizations and programs.  
         Councilmember Dames is the past President of the La Mirada Athletic Council, a life member of the VFW and Knights of Columbus, and a Boardmember of the La Mirada Youth Foundation and Beatitudes of Our Lord School.  He has been honored as the "Kiwanis Administrator of the Year", and has received the Kiwanis Governor's Award for Distinguished Service.  He has also received the PTA Honorary Service and Continuing Service Award. He received the 2005 Community Service Award from the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints.  

            Councilmember Dames received his B.A. Degree from St. Michael's College in Santa Fe, New Mexico.  He and his wife of 44 years, Gerrie, have two children, Peter, Beth and a grandson Timothy.
 
            Councilmember Dames is currently serving as a Delegate to the Southern California Joint Powers Insurance Authority and to the Southern California Associaion of Governments.  He is the City’s liaison to the Chamber of Commerce.

COUNCILMEMBER STEVE JONES
CITY OF LA MIRADA
 

Councilmember Steve Jones was elected to the La Mirada City Council on March 2, 1999 and re-elected on March 4, 2003 and March 6, 2007 and served as Mayor in 2002-03 and 2007-08.  A teacher at La Mirada High School, Councilmember Jones’ classes include U.S. History and Economics.  He was selected “Teacher of the Year” for the Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District in 1993.   
       
Councilmember Jones served on the City’s Parks and Recreation Commission from June 1981 to June 1988 and June 1996 until he was elected to the City Council.  He served as Chairman of that Commission in 1998-1999.  He was also a member of the City’s Historical Commission from June 1994 to June 1996.  
           
Councilmember Jones is a member of the La Mirada Kiwanis Club and serves as a sponsor of the La Mirada High School Key Club.  He has long served as an advisor to La Mirada’s Youth-In-Government program and received the City of La Mirada’s “Volunteers in Action Award” in 1997.  
        
Councilmember Jones holds an Associate of Arts degree from Cerritos College, a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from Biola University, and a Master of Arts in History from California State University, Fullerton.  He has been a resident of La Mirada since 1955.  He and his wife, Janis, have two sons, Bryce and Bryan.
