City of La Mirada
EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS
Emergency preparedness is a priority in the City of La Mirada. The City's emergency
preparedness program promotes disaster planning and coordination in advance
of natural or man-made disasters.
To facilitate ongoing emergency preparedness efforts in the community, the
City developed a coordinated emergency preparedness network, the Disaster
Preparedness Steering Committee (DPSC), in 1987. The DPSC promotes awareness of safety and
preparedness techniques and enhances emergency preparedness and planning efforts
by providing education and training to members of the residential and business
communities.
Since 1985, the City
has conducted annual disaster response exercises to increase emergency preparedness
in neighborhoods, schools, businesses,
community
organizations
and public safety agencies. This year, the exercise was conducted on
Thursday, November 16, 2006. The scenario involved a prolonged heat
wave causing power
disruptions and mass casualties throughout La Mirada. Over 20 organizations
and 7,500 participants were involved in this years drill. Previous
drills have included earthquakes, train derailments, terrorism, chemical
spills, a
plan crash, and floods.
