Applying for a City of La Mirada Job
Can I apply for any position at anytime?
The City of La Mirada only accepts applications for positions that are advertised as “Open.” Applications are not accepted unless a recruitment is open.
What does "Open Until Filled" mean?
This means the position will close without notice once a sufficient number of applications from qualified individuals have been received. If you intend to mail your application, call the Personnel Office to confirm that the position has not closed.
How will I know what jobs I am qualified for and when to apply?
When a position becomes available, the Personnel Office posts the open position on the City web site located in the "Employment Opportunity" section. Personnel also sends announcements to surrounding cities, universities, community colleges and adult schools. Occasionally, Personnel will post ads in local newspapers or in other publications.
How do I obtain an application and other application materials?
There are two ways to obtain a City application. Applicants can go to the "Employment Opportunities" section of the City web site and download an application and supplemental questionnaire(s), pickup an application and supplemental questionnaire(s) at La Mirada City Hall, 13700 La Mirada Blvd., La Mirada CA 90638.
What are some other things I need to know when applying?
For your application to receive full consideration, fill out the application completely even if you choose to include a resume along with your application. We do no accept resumes in lieu of an application. Also, do not simply state "See Resume" when asked to describe your responsibilities and experience. Your qualifications will be based on the information you provide on your application. Your resume will only be reviewed for clarification purposes. If you need more space to describe additional work experience, you may use an additional application form or continue on a separate sheet of paper using the same format.
A completed criminal history supplemental questionnaire and occasionally a second supplemental questionnaire is required along with the City application. The second supplemental questionnaire focuses on the responsibilities of the position you are applying for and allows you to elaborate on your previous experience. To determine if the position you are applying for requires a second supplemental questionnaire please look at the "Employment Opportunities" section of the City web site.
Certain positions may request a copy of a certificate(s) along with the application and supplemental questionnaire(s). For a detailed description of certificates that are required please see the "Typing Certificates" and "Recreation and Aquatics Certifications" sections of the City web site.
Make sure you fully complete the City application, criminal history supplemental questionnaire, and if necessary the second supplemental questionnaire, and a copy of the certificate that may be requested. Applications will not be accepted by fax or email. Please make sure your application, supplemental questionnaire(s), and certificates are received by the filing deadline. No late paperwork will be accepted.
What should I do if I have a change of address or phone number?
You should immediately notify the Personnel Office of your change. If we are unable to contact you because you have moved or changed your phone number without our knowledge, you may be withdrawn from further consideration.
What should I do if I am out of town when the recruitment closes?
You should immediately notify the Personnel Office. The Personnel Office will make a note of your absence and may be able to reschedule your interview if you are selected to participate in this process.
If I previously completed an application will I be automatically considered for other positions?
No. You must submit a separate application, supplemental questionnaire(s) and a certificate(s) (if applicable) for each open recruitment.
What happens after I file my application?
You will receive a notification by U.S. mail on the status of your application after the filing deadline. Each application is given careful review and consideration. Recruitments that generate a large number of applicants may take longer to process.
What are the steps or phases of the recruitment and selection process?
A detailed description of the process is in the "Recruitment Process" area of the web site.
If an examination is given, does everyone who applies for the open position take the test?
Only certain positions require a test as part if the selection process. Each application is carefully reviewed based on the job requirements. Only those candidates whose experience and training most closely match the City's needs will be invited to participate in the testing process. Candidates who meet the minimum requirements of the position may not be invited to participate in the testing process.
What happens after I complete an examination?
You will be notified of your test results as soon as possible by U.S. mail. If you have successfully passed the written or practical examination, you may be invited to the next phase of the selection process.
What should I do if I am invited to an interview?
