CAL FIRE Releases 2025 Fire Hazard Severity Zone Maps for Local Responsibility Areas

In February 2025, CAL FIRE—through the Office of the State Fire Marshal (OSFM)—began the rollout of its 2025 Recommended Fire Hazard Severity Zone (FHSZ) maps for Local Responsibility Areas (LRAs) across California.

These updated maps, which are typically revised every 10 years, are developed using science-based models that assess wildfire risk based on factors such as fire history, fuels, vegetation, terrain, and local weather patterns. The maps designate areas as having moderate, high, or very high wildfire hazard potential.

On March 24, 2025, OSFM released the 2025 Recommended LRA Fire Hazard Severity Zone maps, which include areas within the City of La Mirada. The maps are available for public review on the OSFM website at osfm.fire.ca.gov.

Key Information about the Fire Hazard Severity Zone (FHSZ) Maps:

  • Under California Government Code Section 51178, the State is required to identify areas at Moderate, High, and Very High risk for wildfire hazards.
  • The previous LRA maps, last updated in 2007, only designated Very High fire hazard zones.
  • The newly released maps may now include areas that were not previously identified by the Office of the State Fire Marshal.
  • Local jurisdictions are required to take specific actions within 30 days and 120 days following receipt of the updated maps.

Public Review and Comment Period

After viewing the updated maps, the public is invited to provide feedback. The comment period has closed.

Public Hearing

A public hearing to consider adoption of the ordinance will be scheduled for a future City Council meeting. The date and time of the hearing will be announced once confirmed and made available on the City’s website and meeting agenda.
